Well, I guess the best place to begin is I hope you are all healthy, happy & safe!
Obviously the talk of the town, the continent and the planet is the coronavirus COVID-19 that’s making it’s way around.
I’m no scientist but what I’ve learned today is this…
People want their toilet paper!
Some of us have been openly wondering why Toilet paper has become such a hot commodity these days? I had several conversations in Costco today with various good humored shoppers and staff members regarding the subject, no one had a reasonable explanation. I’ve read that in these times where we can’t control everything (especially regarding this virus), having a stockpile of toilet paper makes us feel like we have some control over our cleanliness and hygiene. I suppose I see the merit in that opinion, to a degree… (subtext: don’t see the merit at first, sorta see the merit somewhere in the middle. Still don’t see the merit on the back end. “wink wink”) Yes that was intentional.
…So I arrived at Costco at 9:55 this a.m. (I later found out that the line-up began at 8 a.m. and ran around the warehouse.) I drove through the parking lot for 10 minutes, (maybe 15?) then decided I’d just drive around the corner to the huge Shoppers drug mart/Tim Horton’s parking lot and walk over to Costco. By the time I was in the doors of Costco at 10:33 a.m. They were sold out of Toilet paper. I’d call that Panic shopping. I had seen people with 4 or 5 packs of Kirkland Toilet paper in their carts walking out to their cars when I pulled in!
Now look I have a decent supply of T.P. at home, but that’s because I’m a Costco planner (and also at Costco 2 days a week) So when I’m down to 1 pack of Toilet paper, I’ll make sure that I buy 1 or 2 back-ups. (as a former cook, you need back-ups on the line for the dinner rush, that thinking has never left me) This, however, I do over a longer period of time so not to contribute to what is currently happening.
Panic Shopping.
I understand that we’re facing the unknown, and that is frightening. But 5 packs of T.P. aren’t going to save you from COVID-19… Or maybe they will and I’m just being naive, which, is entirely possible! I’m happy to be proven wrong, it does happen around here!
Ewok and Dexter like to remind me of that like when I think they want to be outside, but they really don’t want to be.
Accusatory stares…. They planned that, I’m sure of it!
Anyhow.

Also don’t forget Costco does have home delivery available at Costco.ca, so you can order products online and have them shipped to you thus avoiding the insanity of the aisle if you’d like. (Kirkland T.P. is currently sold out though, of course!)
That option may save you time and sanity, or if you are NOT FEELING WELL, this might help keep the rest of us well, and you still get your goodies & necessities!
As we move forward with this situation there will be so much more information coming forward, and I plan to be here to help with that as much as I can! I have no plans on stopping my Costco shopping (unless ordered to by the government) so you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be doing my posts as usual! However as this is a “fluid” situation (pun intended I think???) things can always change, but as long as they don’t I’ll be staying safe, clean and shopping at Costco and posting our deals every week!

DY it depends on how long ago you bought them. I’d take the receipt with you and ask the customer service desk, they’re usually happy to accommodate!

The fellow at the cash at the Kingston Costco told me one man bought 15 packages. I saw a couple loading two carts! I told a woman who had a push cart LOADED with TP I hoped she wasn’t going to resell it! She shook her head but wasn’t convincing. No one needs that much. These people have no morals. I actually saw people RUNNING for the toilet paper when the store opened. I can’t believe it sold out so quickly. They had one aisle filled with pallets of Kirkland TP and another with Cashmere. Staff were directing cart traffic in those aisles.
It’s absolutely nuts Bev. People running for T.P…. I agree, and the people who are buying and then reselling for a profit??? Disgraceful.

Well I’m sitting here on the beach reading your blog. It helps me get my weekly Costco “hit” even if I can’t make it into a warehouse… thanks! We flew out of Hamilton to Cancun last week but may end up going into Toronto instead 🙄 and “they” are asking folks who’ve been out of the country to voluntarily self quarantine… hmmm. Adios for now! ☀️👙🌴

Hello, thanks for your weekend blog. Kitty cats sure are giving you the stare.
I finally made it out to Costco yesterday. Police cruiser with flashing lights was out front.
Door greeters were handing out nice big Clorox wipes for our carts, I liked that. I decided to wear some medical purple gloves, glad I did, every little bit helps.
I found three good looking cops hanging out on a huge sofa hidden behind a bunch of seasonal items. I had a little chat with them, very pleasant. I am happy to say I got 4 boxes of Boursin cheese and a whole lot of other staples, just in case…..
No toilette paper, people were actually hovering around the loading/delivery zone hoping it would magically appear. They were gobbling up packs of paper towels, could these be used in a pinch??? No eggs at all, very little milk, no water, sold out of many items.
I found people were actually very nice and friendly with each other. Kudos to the Costco staff, they remained cool and pleasant under pressure. Hope they are rewarded with a nice big bonus!!

I like that you pointed out they were “good looking cops” haha! I’m sure that we’ll be seeing more of them around our Costco locations if people keep going nuts on the hoarding thing.

I’m needing a few things and was considering going tomorrow, but maybe I will just hit up Loblaws instead!
I personally do not get the hoarding of toilet paper, but maybe I am naive too… or it could be that I have enough for a little while always having an extra package in the basement, so not worries.
My cat is an indoor cat, but if it’s a sunny day, no matter the temperature, when the dog goes out, he wants out too. Give the chance, he will bolt out and then just stand there, unsure of what to do next haha

Hahaha, I think that’s hilarious that they want to get out so badly but when they do finally get the chance it’s almost like they’re stunned! Well you know me Jennifer, I’ll pack an extra side of patience with me and make my rounds as always and thank the lord I’m always stocked up on the basics!
Thank you for keeping us posted and being the bravest during this pandemic non-sense. I too went shopping last wednesday afternoon (Walmart on Cote-Vertu in St-Laurent) and the parking lot was practically empty and so as the store. Shame on people who are buying in bulk to later sell on eBay for a 2000% profit margin… On another note, I will surely purchase those Gotham Steel pans as I saw a chef on CityLine that cooked eggs in 6 different non-stick pans (varying from $4 up to $150); the only one that cooked eggs without sticking (without any fat!) was a Gotham Steel skillet. I got rid of all non-stick coated pans that were purchased prior to 2013 a few weeks ago, even if they looked almost brand new. At $34.97 for 2 new non-stick skillets, it’s an amazing deal. Thanks again for sharing your great finds! 🙂
Thank you JoseeM. I’ve been curious about those Gotham Steel pans too, but as you know I’m trying to keep my stock of pans to a specific number so I don’t overwhelm my cupboards with extras… Though I do hate eggs when they stick to the pan!
I can’t believe that people are so selfish and terrible that they do that kind of stuff, it’s revolting to think that someone would actually do that, like the Lysol wipes people… And then to think they got upset when amazon and ebay banned them, shame on them!
