What the heck? I agree we have to list all ingredients so consumers are aware and can choose what to buy given their allergies and sensitivities, but why do items with these ingredients have to be recalled? There are so many different, and sometimes surprising or unusual, allergies that to recall everything that contains them would mean pulling an awful lot of products that are safe for the vast majority of people. I submitted this question to Costco to see what their rationale is.
I think it has to do with CFIA being pretty strict about listing ingredients for those exact reasons. There’s also alot of liability on Costco’s end if anything were to happen to someone. It’s a pain in the butt for sure, but I understand why they need to do this.
Here’s the reply I got from Costco (after a reply that didn’t answer my question): In response to your email, this particular recall was initiated due to the fact that the meatloaf was never supposed to contain eggs or mustard. Because these allergens were found inside the product, the CFIA ordered a recall to notify our members of the possible risk.
So I guess, even though they said the ingredients might be in it, since they weren’t supposed to be, and therefore didn’t say it DOES contain them, they had to be pulled. Interesting!
