Kingston police warn of fraudulent Costco rebate scam!!!

Hello Costco shoppers and Happy Holidays!

This is a warning for my fellow Kingston, ON. shoppers and Costco family regarding potential scam texts currently happening. Costco would never text you and ask for your banking information, your rewards will be mailed to you, not texted to you… Don’t fall for this nonsense folks!

Here’s some info from the CTV news.

“Kingston police are warning residents of a phishing scam that has surfaced in the region. It claims to be a rebate from Costco but it is, in fact, an attempt to get a hold of your banking information.

In a press release, police say residents receive text messages indicating an “annual rebate” is ready for deposit. The potential victims are asked to select their bank from a list, and are directed to a website that appears to be legitimate.

The website asks for the user’s name, account information and password in order to deposit the rebate; however, there is no rebate and the information put into the site is passed on to the fraudsters, who can use it to access a victim’s bank account.

“Please do not click on any links in emails or text message from unknown or un-anticipated contact. If you have any doubt, look up direct contact information for the business to confirm the validity of the message,” police said.”

Text Scam Not Affiliated With Costco

There is currently a text scam circulating that asks members to click on a link to claim their Capital One Costco Mastercard Cash Back reward. The text is a SCAM. The Capital One Costco Mastercard Cash Back reward will be mailed by Capital One to eligible cardholders mid-January 2022. No digital coupon will be distributed. Do not answer the text or click on the link as it is not from Costco or Capital One.

Please be careful folks, please keep your banking information private and never text it to anyone!!!
