Natalie reviews: Prana Spicy Peas & Fava

Last week on the blog I reviewed the Costco Bellitalia Italian Meatball Bake and the Costco Comtes de Provence Salted Butter Caramel.

If you like my reviews for Costco food products, the best thing is that you can follow me on Instagram or Facebook and tell your friends about my blog Costcuisine, where I review new Costco food products each week! You can also check out my YouTube channel, where I do video reviews!

I needed a snack mix for when I have my friend over who’s gluten-free and dairy-free so I picked up this Prana Peas & Fava Protein Mix. I paid $10.99 Canadian for the one kilogram bag.

The mix comes in a resealable bag and has a best before date that’s just under a year from when I purchased it. This makes a convenient afternoon or evening snack and would be great for bringing to work too. I don’t know if kids would really enjoy it due to the spice and it’s also not the safest for young kids because the mix is full of choking hazards.

1/3 cup of mix or 50 grams has 200 calories, eight grams of fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, five grams of fibre, five grams of sugar, 12 grams of protein and 290 milligrams of sodium. A third of a cup really isn’t that much mix, about a large handful so it’s really easy to eat a lot of calories when you’re snacking on foods like this. I do appreciate that there’s a decent amount of protein in the mix.

I tried each component of the snack mix on it’s own and then tried them all together. When I first tried an almond I detected zero spice or heat, the fava beans were much spicier and so were the peas and edamame. I’m very sensitive to spice/heat and I will say this mix is definitely spicy and packing some heat but it doesn’t linger for long and isn’t intense, it’s just a moderate amount of heat. The main flavor you taste is a nice savory, slightly sweet, very salty seasoning. Everything in this mix in nice and crunchy which I find really satisfying. Honestly I enjoyed this mix way more than I thought I would, I usually don’t love spicy food and the idea of beans and peas as a snack isn’t my preference but it turns out it’s a really tasty mix!
