I write to you today to let you know of the fall of the Sultan. Sultan Salton that is. The Kettle. Also with some extra sales that turned up today!

So yes as I was going about my business in Costco this afternoon I noticed a bunch of new sales popped up, from the Kuerig K + elite brewer on sale for $99.99 ($50.00 off!) to the Ninja Foodi pressure cooker on sale for $169.99 ($30.00 off) to the PS4 1TB fortnight bundle at $140 off! That’s crazy and I was almost temped to buy one, but that’s not why I was there nor do I need a PS4 to distract me from other duties around here.

Anyhow to see all of those great sales, click that glorious blue link up above, or scroll down. Or read your way through the drama that unfolded around the Kettle I bought a few weeks ago.

Yes folks, as it was predicted by readers/prophets Gerald and Paul. Sultan Salton “the boiler of water”s reign over all water needing boiled has come to a close.

Not 2 weeks after taking the throne (or date of purchase, whichever you’d prefer.) he froze at a solid 23 degrees, never to rise again.

As per his wishes, he was interred in his original packaging and brought back to his homeland of Costco.

There is light at the end of the tunnel however! As a new face came to our kingdom (well, kitchen…) and has risen to take the throne! It was none other than…

Sultan Salton the 2nd, boiler of more water!

Ok, that was all a little dramatic but I thought it was kind of funny.

Yes, the silly kettle stopped working yesterday (as reader Gerald and Paul predicted) so I returned it (with no issues) and bought a new one to give it a try again… We’ll see how long this one lasts (hopefully longer than 2 weeks!) But Either way I’ll let you know.

Anyhow I must get ready for work. It’s going to be a long night and I’ve gotta be ready to brave the aisles tomorrow morning bright and early for the Costco Black Friday sales!

See you tomorrow folks.

Long live Sultan Salton the 2nd!

  1. Thank you for the added post, much appreciated.

I was thinking of getting one of those Insta-pots on sale.
Does anyone have one? Looking for comments both good and bad.

    Thanks everyone! 🙂

    • Didn’t notice the reply button. Don’t know if you’ll get a notification, but you will see I answered your question in a separate comment below. Good luck!

    • I’ve had an insta-pot for a couple of years – love it. As already mentioned, you have to add on the heating up time and often add time for de-pressuring, so recipes take longer than the simple cooking time listed. My favourite meals to make in the insta-pot are chicken noodle soup, mac&cheese, honey garlic chicken thighs, ribs, chicken taco bowl, loaded cauliflower soup, chicken pot pie stew. I don’t care for rice done alone in instant pot, nor does it save any time in my opinion, but I like it for relatively quick weeknight meals. I also love doing hard-boiled eggs in the pot – they peel so easily!

  2. Thank you so very much for all your posts. Truly appreciated. I bought the Salton kettle a few weeks before you did. I use it a few times a day and so far so good. (I also dry the inside of the kettle at the end of the day (when I remember) to prevent discoloration and that seems to help).

To: Layla Bay: I received an Instant-Pot Duo Plus as a gift a few years ago and I absolutely love it.

    • Hmmm, maybe there’s just a few lemons out there… Gonna give this one a fair try though, I did de-scale it with vinegar a few times to keep the sensor nice and clean but still stopped working. Oh well!

  3. Hmmm 😂 how’s about Salton the Sultan of Steam?! Always good to keep a sense of humour when things don’t work out as expected eh?
Yesterday I noticed that many of the Christmas toys are starting to be discounted, probably gearing up for the big clean out of all things festive.
I was told that most of the Black Friday deals will be electronics and weirdly, bread! I have no intention of going anywhere near there so must applaud your bravery and fortitude. However, I will enjoy it vicariously through your post. Thanks!

    • You’re welcome Jan! The Sultan of Steam??? I love it! If I have to resort to a 3rd kingdom of kettles that shall be the title bestowed upon it! Hahaha! Yes, the toys and electronics are going to be the big tickets this year I think, I guess we’ll all find out soon right?

  4. We were earlier adopters of the Instant Pot having owned it for probably 3 years now. It’s an idiot-proof pressure cooker. The new ones also have the sous vide capability that I can’t comment on. Getting back to the pressure cooker aspect, it does a good job. The other night we made a pot roast in about 90 minutes from beginning to end, with results similar to a slow cooker that would have slow cooked for about 8 or 10 hours. Keep in mind that many recipes talk about it only taking 10 or 20 minutes to cook something, but realize that it takes about 15 minutes to come up to pressure and can take another 5 to 15 to release the pressure. These cookers remind me of microwaves when they first came out where manufacturers were trying to make it the only appliance you need (remember the “browning sauce” to make your turkey looked like it had been baked?)! The point is, using it for what it’s good at, and it’s a good appliance. Just don’t believe it will do everything well and in an “instant”.

    • Thanks for your in-put Jonathon! I noticed the Costco one has the sous vide, perfectly cooked steaks, fish etc.. I think I would use all the other features as well.

Keep those comments coming please and thank you 🙂

  5. Oh no! I have an older Salton model (no temp indicator in the handle) & I love it! I’ve had it for a good 15 mos & have had NO problems.
Thanks for the second post. Wishing you luck

    • Thank you Terri. I’m glad your Salton kettle has lasted. Maybe I just a bad one, it’s ok though that happens sometimes! Thanks for the luck, I’m sure I’ll need it!

    • I had the older model too – it worked for years – still worked in fact, but my daughter wanted us to ditch it and get a new shiny one, only because the inside was a bit calcified despite treating with vinegar and the outside was looking a bit grungy. Hoping the new shiny temperature control one works longer than yours did!

    • Haha, thank you Jennifer. I did have fun with it, let’s just hope I don’t have to do a second one in a few weeks… Though perhaps I\ll start a story just in case!
